- Let’s keep it real, unless you’re a 20 something relatively attractive female, nobody is going to “mentor” you worth a damn.
- Did 10 years at 4-6 companies, from startups to big co. Felt like most coworkers were big pussies who couldn’t even change their own car oil. Their time is just so valuable. I was always handy, did all my own auto/home repairs, etc. so took the leap and started buying distressed properties as-is in “bad” neighborhoods. Learned a lot about evicting squatters, keeping homeless and druggies from trespassing and loitering, fixing roofs, replacing leaky cast iron plumbing, repairing refrigerators and stoves, fishing romex up 3 floors, renting to millennials, gentrifying a street, etc.
- Follow the money. Obama just purchased a 8 figure beachfront property in a zone predicted to be hit hard during climate change.
- It’s because most “gurus” don’t actually own and manage properties. The only way I can make a double digit cap rate in the hood is by doing all the maintenance and labor myself.
- Culturally it can’t happen. They need their own version of Trump to erase 3 regulations for every new one. In addition the youth have zero ambition due to the strong safety net.
- I quit software after about a decade of experience. The passion was gone and I could only argue that MeteorJS (or other hyped tech of the week) was not ready for our production use. But kids will be kids and the rockstars started using my age to shame me to leave, which worked. Using rails for our next services was apparently just too old school. This is the dark side of software development that rarely is mentioned.
- Start a family.
- SE asia. Seriously. You can probably get a 15/20 there but only a 7/20 here.
- One of my interview questions is if they prefer manual or automatic transmission. Most of our rockstars drive manual.
- Massachusetts is literally run by tyrants. No one cared when the attorney general trampled over the constitution by banning the sale of built to compliant "assault" weapons and now this. The disarmed populace has to just take it. The rulers know best.
- The real dark side is realizing you've been subsidizing the personal lives of management for the last 5 years. They get married, buy houses, have kids, etc.
