  1. I too am annoyed by “faux leather” as it is so stupid to see some ad saying leather jacket and when you look at the details see faux leather. That is not a leather jacket it is a plastic jacket so cut the shit. Same level of ragebait as things like vegetarian “meat”balls.
  2. "very interesting palm....I see a pool in your future"
  3. Some comments saying there was not even a single picture but for me there was a picture almost immediately near the top of the article so not sure why others are not seeing it.

This is a neat story I can only imagine those who have lived there their entire lives and had no idea that this would one day happen. What a amazing treat for them.

I have recently became interested in palm trees. I know a person who immigrated from Slovakia to here in Western Canada many years ago. In her front yard stands a beautiful palm tree probably around 18 or so feet tall. Seeing how we get snow here every year and always associated palm trees with warmer climates I didn’t think they could actually do so well. The couple I came across in the past were very small and the owner stated that he needs to cover them every winter to keep them safe. According to this lady with the big palm she never did that. She said her family member brought seeds from Slovakia years ago and they just started them inside and planted it outside when small and it survived the cold months no protection.

Now I eagerly want to try grow a palm tree myself. Her tree has a few big bunches of seeds hanging on but I have no clue when they are due to fall. And due to this ladies age she forgets exactly when the seeds drop also but that they turn a kind of orangish color first. So I keep watch hoping I will catch some once they fall. It is just a neat looking tree and hers seems to be very hardy I hope I can continue the life of this tree and the memory of this lady by planting my own.

  4. I don’t think so either in the sense we are seeing in this case. As in there should be some legal protections like sure Apple can choose to close his accounts but should allow him a reasonable amount of time to export his data. But one should in best practice always have their own redundancies as too many times we have seen companies lose data for various reasons.
  5. I don’t think it is stupid but the golden rule is multiple backups. I personally believe 3 backups is the minimum. A physical one and 2 others. Either another physical copy stored at another location to protect against things like fire or 2 cloud backups to prevent situations like this. But I have only ever met one person who did this. His house burned to the ground and lost all data at his house but had back ups at his brother and on some cloud service and lost nothing. I was impressed as most people I know have zero back ups.
  6. I hope you get it back. I always had the mindset that if I am a paying customer that this type of situation is very unlikely. But you are literally a massive paying customer and you got hit. The truth is you are just a nobody even as a customer who has dumped thousands of dollars as a loyal supporter. Showing up on HackerNews is a positive thing as the only way to get any traction in these situations is either be famous and complain or your story going viral and someone with power seeing your plea. I worried about only having a physical copy of my family photos so started paying apple for some storage. This type of event worries me. Good reminder to have multiple backup solutions.
  7. Not stupid. Just experiencing life and sometimes amazing experiences have a chance of danger. You get to choose what risk levels you are okay with. Props to that ranger who agreed with that belief.
  8. That does not seem like a good idea at all. Even if you are “not doing something stupid” the fact that you would be circumventing their app to bypass censorship they may deem you treasonous and a possible risk. Who knows what they could arrest you for.
  9. This is an interesting question I wish I knew. Because I play war thunder and it is free to play but once a year I pay about $50 for the annual premium membership because I enjoy the game and worth it to me. But ultimately it is supposedly a Russian game. I know they have offices in other parts of the world but I have really wondered if the money is going back to Russia or if all the developed have just left and get it elsewhere in a different county.
  10. And it is very clear that AI will continue to be part of daily life into the future so my belief is not punish the use of it but rather help the students navigate and use it more effectively. Who cares if AI was used to write a paper if the students can demonstrate they have learned the knowledge and that the facts they presented are accurate?
  11. Yes I remember those days. I was pretty young but it definitely made news and was definitely a hot topic. People adamantly argued that music like that was a huge factor influencing defiant, disobedient anti police youth at the time. No mention of the influence of societal and economical disparities many minorities and some communities faced. But the truth is there are many factors that influence all our beliefs and feelings and music is absolutely something that has effect on how we feel.
  12. Lots one could say here. First it kind of feels like the old saying

"you won't always have a calculator in your pocket so learn the math" we all heard. And now we all have a calculator. This seems like the next moment similar to the calculator saying. Kids using Ai to help with papers and "cheat". Teachers trying to detect Ai usage and punish kids. I imagine there will one day be a shift and instead of punishing kids will instead be taught how to use Ai to help with papers but also shown how to also verify the information and possibly tested if they remember any of the information.

The goal of teaching should be to help students gain knowledge. Ai in my opinion has potential to be a great tool for learning. Not just writing complete papers, that isn't great. But tasks like summarizing articles to more quickly determine if they are relevant. Or to read articles to students as many struggle to read well no matter how much they try.

I know there are some cons to Ai and learning but I think with the right attitude it could be a powerful tool for students.

  13. Indeed. It felt like an obituary but to announce a wedding. Looking up the town Wikipedia states a population of just under 20k as of 2020 so back in 1991 when that article was written most likely less. So a very small community and I imagine that back then it was just common for people to make announcements like that.

But I also think the city did hold some old fashioned beliefs and views. 1. "In 1992, Lake Forest gained national attention when it attempted to ban the sale of offensive music to anyone under the age of 18.[15] City council members used existing ordinances against obscenity—defined in the codes as "morbid interest in nudity, sex or excretion"—to buttress their campaign.[15] Mayor Charles Clarke stated, "If they sell an obscene tape to somebody underage, we will prosecute."[15] The person who came up most frequently in discussions of obscene content was Ice-T, a rapper who has since also performed as an actor."

Interesting to think back to those days and remember how censored thing were. I was born in the 80s so nude scenes or swearing was just not a thing on standard broadcasting here in Canada. I remember hearing shit on a show at some point and it really stood out. Then channels like Showcase came along and it seemed like it was wild as a teen. Now anything ever aired back then feels tame to today. I am surprised what defines PG13 hasn't been changed because I am certain there is nothing happening in a PG13 movie up to a R rated movie that my teens don't know about. Anyways I am going on here if I continue I am going to start talking about how I am against ID to use the internet. Just found the article like you say strangely written. Cheers

  14. How did they agree to those terms?
  15. It is still an important attack vector to be aware of regardless of how unrealistic you believe it to be. Many powerful hacks come from very simple and benign appearing starting points.
  16. Loved this site. Only thing I could think to add would be the ability to click each item and be taken to a wiki page or some further source of information about the object.
  17. Have you watched the series The Silo? It is on Apple TV. I love the show. Based on a serious of books. Season 3 should be coming out some time next year so a good time to watch the first 2 seasons if you have not. Your comment basically made me think of that show. They are a multi generational society that lives in a massive underground silo. And many of your concepts you mentioned play out. But in that show the brutal and very strict rules of course were used to keep people in order and from not rebelling. Of course as brutal as they are and do their best to control and stop rebellions it will always be inevitable. I don't want to give any spoilers away but I highly enjoyed the show and definitely recommend it. Cheers.
  18. unless we can some how find a way to go faster then the speed of light and I am talking like tens of thousands of times faster at a minimum or some way to warp to different locations like a worm hole that instantaneously transports you far distances there is no way we as humans will do anything even close to what one would describe as travel the universe. The Andromeda galaxy is about 2.5 million light years away so at 10000 times the speed of light we are still talking 250 years to get there. Then when you think that the observable universe is an estimated 93 billion light years at 10000 times the speed of light that would be 9,300,000 years to cross it.

I don't say all that to sound negative or shoot down the idea but more of an acknowledgement of the amazing size of our universe and how incredibly tiny and limited we are in this universe. I have spent countless hours as a kid growing up watching shows like Star Trek in particular and imagining being the character Q from the next generation. He can travel all of time and space and that concept has consumed much of my thoughts as I was younger.

  19. If supply was cut off and critical defense tech was at risk of being crippled I am certain it would be deemed a matter of nation security and things would move very quickly.
  20. My initial thoughts were so they could scan for csam while pretending as if users have a choice to not have their privacy violated.
  21. There was a really good section of the article that went into great detail of the math and how it would easily outweigh the CO2. How it would only require something like diverting 2% of all flights as it is only that percentage of flights that make the majority of the contrails and that the diversion of the average flight would be something small like an extra 2 minutes flight time for shorter flights and like 6 minutes on a longer flight which the article states is not much increase in fuel consumption as well as not such a time increase to dissatisfy customers. So if the article is accurate in their math then the associated costs in all three fuel, CO2, and time are not an issue.
  22. I think once mainstream this will be very popular. No tattoos myself but always considered it. One of the biggest concerns I have is who do I go to. Everyone knows there are all sorts of tattoo artists some good at realism, some good at lettering, or many many more abilities one may be good at tattooing. And there are also artists who should never be tattooing. With this machine I imagine it would give a consistent reliable tattoo that would be exactly like the design one chose.

Other benefits I could see is I imagine it could be much faster. I also imagine it could bring costs down eventually and you could select the design and know that will be $200 and one hour. It would take out a lot of the unknowns those unsure about tattoos hold in my opinion. I would be willing to try this machine out.

  23. Literally everything around us has the same dangers. Like getting into a car and doing 70mph in the opposite direction of some stranger doing the same speed possibly drunk or high. This tech will be completely standard and everywhere eventually and no one will pay attention to it. Benefits will outweigh any risks and just like cars people won’t be going around fearing them.
  24. This won't do anything to help. I work as a health care worker who visits seniors in their homes. I can not even count the number of times I have had to help them "fix" their TVs. The biggest culprit is not the TV itself but the digital service provider box.

For those of use old enough to remember how TV was back in the day you would turn on your TV and less then a second later the display would be on and you would be on the last channel you had on before it was turned off. It was instant and it was easy. Most seniors grew up with exactly that and it was easy. Fast forward to digital boxes and it stopped people from splitting the signal and running as many TVs as you wanted and forced people to pay extra for running more TVs. So it was a big money grab for providers with very little benefit for users.

The biggest issue I have now days is how most digital boxes do not just turn on and put you where you were last. Most turn on to some front page that advertises movies you can rent or "smart" services you can log into. This is where I see a lot of seniors get hung up. To you and me ya it is totally simple to navigate to the live TV but to an elderly person many can not do so even if you show them 500 times. And it drives me crazy. You want to help seniors build a TV that can offer them all the local channels without the need for a service provider's digital box and have it so those channels are exactly what they get when they turn on the TV and it takes them to the last channel they had on when it starts. That is what seniors need.

  25. I do not think it would be easy but with advances in testing and the budget of a 3 letter agency I have no doubt it could be figured out. The way I saw it happening in my mind was somewhere after the flush down the pipe a sample would be extracted.

This is more in the realm of conspiracy theory but I have wondered about it once upon a time thinking of book ideas. But the reality is that this idea is way to complicated. Instead many people willingly have their DNA tested and information is put into a database which I am sure every 3 letter agency already has full access to. Also do a crime and you and your future and past family DNA privacy is gone after a court ordered sample exposes you and all your family. We also have situations like cord blood being tested after birth without permission. So in the end no complicated system is really needed. I think DNA privacy is doomed in the end. Which in some situations is good (horrible crimes) but in others will be really bad (denied insurance based on genetics).

  26. It is almost impossible to fully remove that voice in the back of your head that will question if you were cheated. Because the fact is at the end of the day sports are played by humans and humans make mistakes, humans are susceptible to bribes, humans are susceptible to threats and there are many other factors that could influence or force cheating by players or bad calls by the officials.

There are literally countless incidents of people cheating. So my suggestion is to hope it doesn't happen but also just avoid making bets if you are not comfortable with the fact that you may lose.

  27. I once thought that public bathrooms could be an easy place to mass collect DNA. The sensors that tell the toilet the person has moved away flush the toilet could be altered to do that but also use facial recognition which would be compared to the nations drivers license/photo ID databases attempting to match who is using the toilet. We are so used to them now that no one would be the wiser that they were also doing bio-metric scanning. Then when the toilet flushes a sample would be collected to be used in DNA testing. In places like airports you could also capture international visitors and since they all need ID to enter it could be made easy to learn their identity.
  28. How do you stay warm camping in near freezing conditions? I think pads are more so for insulation to the ground then comfort. Yes they add comfort but a cold ground will suck the heat out of you so fast. How would you describe your typical tent bed time set up?
  29. I am from British Columbia and camping is a very popular activity. Sleeping on a hard floor is not a problem at all. Sure most would probably prefer a mattress and some padding but even with limited gear usually one could at least roll up a t-shirt or a sweater and tuck that under your neck and head and get comfortable on a hard floor.

But unlike India British Columbia is a completely different climate. We can go from very comfortable sunny warm days to very cold nights. The last time I went camping it was May and the days were nice but the night dropped down to like 5c. I have teens and told them all to pack lots of warm clothes, told them it will be cold at night, made them bring extra blankets. But in the end they still did not have enough and in the middle of the night were so cold. So I gave them 2 of my blankets and some of my clothing. This left me absolutely freezing. I had to finally get up at 1am and make a fire. I struggled to warm up and even had to go start my car and put on the heat for a bit. I put a large rock on the fire and got it hot. I put the rock into a cast iron pan I brought and put it onto a couple sticks in my tent so it would not burn the floor. I had to keep that rock close to me all night and I still was cold and miserable.

So yes on a warm night, and we have those here in BC, a pad is not essential at all. But for the other 10 months of the year if you don't have the right gear you will be cold and miserable. Being directly on the ground is like sleeping on a cold water bed (yes I am that old). It feels refreshing at first but then you fall asleep and wake up with your core temperature stolen and cold.

  30. Familiarity. Many grew up eating the boxed cakes so that is what represents what a cake should taste like. And in my opinion the taste and texture of many boxed cakes is good. Plus the simplicity of adding an egg, some oil and water makes it very appealing to many.
