It’s worth noting that the author is not reverse engineering keyboard firmware at all. He is reverse engineering a firmware update tool which is (typically) significantly easier.
I attempted something like this a year or two ago and wish I would have seen this blog then. I didn’t get as far and in the end I just spent the few extra $ and got a qmk compatible keyboard. So much easier to be able to remap and change things through a web browser.
