- > I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels Apple’s quality is degrading.
Tbh I don’t really feel this way. We all agree hands down that Macbook has the best hardware. Apple Silicon has been a huge success for speed and power consumption. I haven’t used the newest macOS but like the butterfly keyboard and touch bar I assume they’ll work out (or fix by reverting) the issues. It’s probably not even that bad. Sonoma is still receiving security updates so I’m good for now.
And most of the things that people want in a non-MacBook laptop are still a few years before falling off patent.
I’m fine waiting and playing around with Framework or Steam machines until then if I need another hobby.
- I wonder how many 5-6 year olds are getting smartphones because parents are divorced and one parent wants to be able to check in on the other, could be something like that is the issue
- How’s this compare to computer/internet usage? I’ve been chronically online most years since age 7 but didn’t get a smartphone until 22 or so.
- What’s normal anyway?
- You should have tried placebo first
- Placebo can be life changing
- Slow feedback loops are an antipattern. Do you like waiting 5 minutes for your checks to run on a separate computer that reports to a separate interface that you then have to navigate to and inspect the error and pull it back into your dev environment to fix? It’s soo much better running locally in 20 seconds and knowing your shit will pass or exactly where the problem is
- Yeah Grok became really shitty recently and I switched back to ChatGPT, I wonder if this is why
- In the article it states: “Faced with mounting evidence that trans is in decline, some progressive and transactivist writers have shifted to arguing that Republican attacks on their movement have pushed trans people back into the closet. However, the FIRE data shows that non-binary students self-censor their opinions less than other students, and feel as free as anyone else to voice their views on transgender issues, with no change after Donald Trump took office for the second time. Accounting for the political views of non-binary students and their peers, there is no evidence that the speech climate for non-binary students worsened on red state campuses more than blue state campuses after 2024. This is not about trans people going back into the closet.”

- I am so against this. I taught myself to read at 4 and taught myself up to 5th grade math in the first grade. They basically let us do whatever we wanted in that class and it was great. Then second grade onward was structured and so incredibly boring as I waited years to finally get back to the math I knew how to do in grade 1. Then I got into algebra and it was another snooze fest going at the pace of everyone else. I was deep into drugs before I got to something interesting like multi dimensional Calculus and it was only due to my severe misbehavior and my parents catching me before I OD’ed on benzos that I became lucid in the last couple of months of class to pick it up. Finally got my shit together in college and got a masters in EE, but man I feel like I wasted so much potential if I could have only gone my speed. And to be clear, I was in a G&T program after 6th grade but it was too little too late. In first grade my best friend was Asian and we worked on math together and geeked out about cool science shit, that’s what I wish I could have done the whole time. I was in a small town where there were few of us, but I imagine NYC could be an amazing place to create a space for gifted learning.
- The METR study showed even though people feel more productive they weren’t https://arxiv.org/abs/2507.09089
- Alexa, Metaverse, being decent human beings
- This is from a Dec 2024 which feels like a while ago
- Sure, that’s considered the worst player type to be and generally tight aggressive is considered the best strategy.
Zero-sum nature of the game aside, Meta developed an AI that wins consistently at poker, so it is possible to be good at poker and win consistently. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluribus_(poker_bot)
- That just makes you a tight passive player which is not the worst kind of player to be but also not likely to win you a lot of money
- Never heard of kilo before, pretty sure this post is just an ad
- My feet seemed to get better after I started running. First time without pain in some time. Even walking made them hurt before. It’s taken a few months to build up though.
BMI of 29 starting so not obese but overweight and running has me down at 27 now.
- Motion control were found to cause higher injury rates than either neutral/stability in this study https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/45/9/715
Matches my own experience, first season of cross country in HS I had neutral shoes and they were perfect, went back for new shoes next season and they put me in motion control shoes which gave me instant knee pain.
- What is a reasonable level of intensity for you?
